Across the course, you will learn or refresh the fundamentals of DRAINS, master and apply the latest ARR guidelines to urban drainage, and explore and build DRAINS models with hands-on examples, case studies and troubleshooting.
Day 1: DRAINS Fundamentals
- Overview of AR&R Module Pre-Work, Getting Started with DRAINS & Building a Hydraulic Model
- Design and Modelling of Piped Drainage Systems
- DRAINS Databases, Design Considerations, Review of Results and more
Day 2: DRAINS Fundamentals
- Complex Overland Flow Routing, Flood Mapping, Open Channels & Headwalls
- Storage Network Routing Models (RORB, RAFTS & WBNM) and the Horton ILSAX Hydrological Model
- Introduction to On-Site Detention (OSD) Systems, Infiltration Systems and more
Day 3 (Optional): DRAINS Extension
- Urban Drainage Design Considerations for Existing Systems & Developing Remedial Drainage Strategies
- Design Considerations for Subdivisions including Complex Detention Basins, Diversion Pits & Output Conversion Tools
- Street Drainage Case Studies, Importing Gauged Rainfall, Estimation of Probable Maximum Precipitation (PMP), and Data Exchange with Other Applications

Hossein Ansari
Technical Manager & Principal Engineer, Watercom
Hossein Ansari is an experienced Civil Engineer with over two decades of work in both private and public sectors. He has previously held roles as a Senior Design Engineer at Sutherland Shire Council and as a Drainage Investigation Engineer at City of Botany Bay Council.
In 2018, Hossein became a co-presenter for the DRAINS workshops alongside Benjamin Kus and Geoffrey O’Loughlin. In 2022, he was appointed as the Technical Services Manager & Principal Engineer at Watercom.
As a consultant, Hossein has been offering his expertise as a Civil Hydraulic Engineer to various consulting firms since 2007 in Australia. His work has encompassed roads, drainage, overland flow path studies, and Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) projects, from initial planning to final design and construction.
His major interests include hydrological and hydraulic modelling and design utilising various computer software programs including DRAINS, HEC-RAS, ILSAX, Civil 3D, AutoCAD, Civil Site Design, MapInfo, QGIS, ArcMap and other GIS software.
Hossein actively contributes to the education of future engineers by delivering lectures at multiple universities, including the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) and Charles Darwin University (CDU).
Venue
All face to face components of this workshop are presented at Cliftons Training Facilities.
Training is carried out on individual PCs, working with examples, spreadsheets and tutorial exercises.
